At the time of Gunn's firing, which resulted after regrettable tweets Gunn posted as long as a decade ago resurfaced online, Horn stated that the "offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him". For a while, there seemed to be a feeling that Disney might take a step back and decide to reverse their decision and give Gunn a second chance.

Unfortunately, it looks as though the Marvel Studios President would not have been much help in the matter. The report does say that Disney is meant to use Gunn's completed Guardians 3 script, though the sources do say that a new director may just want to polish that script a little by themselves before filming which is still set for 2019.

Back in July, Walt Disney Studios dismissed Gunn from the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to Gunn's past controversial tweets. Instead, it was exclusively decided by the higher-ups at Disney.

Variety reports that despite rising public support for Gunn and a big push from his representatives, Disney chair Alan Horn issued the final call not to reinstate Gunn after meeting with him. Sources tell Variety that Feige "stands by the studio's decision", which again doesn't bode well for Gunn, but that's okay, seeing how he's apparently being courted by other studios. Close was recently interviewed about her new film The Wife, but the situation involves Gunn's previous comments and firing did come up. The decision was made as they were believed to be "unacceptable" in the time of #MeToo and weren't part of Disney's family-friendly image.

The cast of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has stood by the director, with Dave Bautista going so far as to say he'd quit Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 if Gunn's script isn't used. The report says that Feige supports Disney's decision in not rehiring Gunn.
