Stenson rallied Sunday to separate himself from a four-man pack for his first victory since the 2016 Open Championship.

The Wyndham Championship is the largest sporting event annually here in the Piedmont Triad.

"I have no doubt I can get it done this week", Baddeley told AAP.

In addition to some of the biggest names in golf, the PGA Tour will have some furry guests this year at the Wyndham Championship.

Brandt Snedeker's opening round at the Wyndham Championship puts him in the history books. SportsLine's model says there are far better values in the 2018 Wyndham Championship field. And Jason day, the hugely talented Australian who reached the pinnacle of the rankings only to tumble away when beset with problems in his private life, has also returned with a bang, winning twice and once again looking every inch the world-class golfer. He's shown a lot of under-the-radar consistency this year, with four top 10s and eight top-20 finishes.

He held his nerve to hole from seven feet at the last, but he enjoyed only a one-shot lead as John Deere specialist Steve Stricker fired a 60 and went on to win the second of his three straight titles with a tournament-record score of 26 under par.

Simpson, victor of the event in 2011 and from the Greensboro area, won the prestigious PLAYERS Championship earlier this year and will tee off at 7:50 a.m. ET Thursday with 2017 Masters champion Garcia, who won at Greensboro in 2012.

Varner fired a seven-under in the first round past year en route to a T10 finish, so he's shown that he can play well here.

Four consecutive birdies from his fourth hole got the ball rolling, before he plundered his inward half, roaring home in 27 strokes with six birdies and an eagle. Snedeker missed a 3-foot birdie putt on No. 8.

Moore, who won here in 2009, made a move up the leaderboard in the afternoon with five birdies in a six-hole span on the front nine.

A really interesting tournament here, the FedEx Cup has really given it an extra edge and for that reason I can see Sergio Garcia doing well, but I also believe Henrik Stenson needs to be watched - he loves this course. "I kind of took that mindset of, well, better get out there and make some birdies if you don't want to be 10, 11 shots behind by the end of this day".

"Could have been even more special", he said, "but happy with the way everything turned out".
