Earlier this week, the Bureau of Meteorology warned of higher fire risks by Wednesday as rising temperatures and expected strengthening winds combined with the very dry conditions across the state.

Emergency warnings were issued to residents at Mount Kingiman, south of Ulladulla, and in North Nowra on Wednesday morning, with some told it is too late to leave.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has completed the first stage of property assessments following the fire, which has burnt through more than 3,300 hectares and is still out of control.

A number of homes on the NSW south coast are under threat from two out-of-control bushfires being whipped up by increasingly strong winds.

NSW rural fire service deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said the fires at Bega and Ulladulla were "quite big" and would stay uncontained for "some time".

There is a total fire ban in place for Sydney, Illawarra and the Hunter Valley.

No homes have been destroyed in any of the fires.

Environmental change academic David Bowman said global warming meant the northern and southern hemisphere fire seasons were overlapping, which was stretching global firefighting resources.
