Croatia's coast guard says a British woman has been saved after spending 10 hours in the Adriatic Sea at night after she fell from a cruise ship.

It comes weeks after a cruise ship worker fell overboard while travelling on the Norwegian Getaway - also run by Norwegian Cruise Line - and was left stranded in the Gulf of Mexico.

The crew of the Croatian Coast Guard ship Cavtat reportedly found her swimming, almost exhausted, near where she is believed to have fallen in.

"I am very lucky to be alive", she said.

The woman - named by newspapers as Kay Longstaff - was taken to hospital in the town of Pula.

They also notified the Croatian navy and coast guard.

The area where she fell off could be seen blocked by a crew member and caution tape in photos taken by a fellow cruise passenger. However, she still managed to explain that she was in the water for 10 hours.
