Track President Ben May said: "It may not be the prettiest job but it's going to be safe".

The 29-year-old driver was attempting to pass Ryan Hunter-Reay when the two cars lightly touched. That caused Hunter-Reay's auto to careen into the wall and Wickens' vehicle was pulled along for the ride. Wickens' vehicle ended up careening into the wall and then sailed over a low wall and crashed into a safety fence before spinning back on to the track.

The race was delayed almost two hours and only eight laps in the 500-mile race had been completed because of Wickens' crash and another accident right before green.

Race victor Alexander Rossi said it was "tough to celebrate" with Wickens in hospital. "If we put a auto out for Stewart, it's got to be the best in the field".

The rest of the race is now delayed, but it's expected to resume as soon as debris is cleared from the track. He declined to comment to reporters out of respect for Wickens.

The crash at Pocono Raceway was the latest grim reminder how drivers in open-wheel racing put their lives on the line.

Medical staff were alongside Wickens nearly immediately, stabilising the driver before transporting him via helicopter to hospital.

It was also the worst since the accident in 2015 that took the life of Justin Wilson, who was hit in the head by the dislodged nose piece of Sage Karam's vehicle after Karam spun out and crashed into the wall in Turn 1 while leading the race. The impact of the wreck tore out about 80 feet of fence, damaged a few posts and stopped the race.

The crash, which saw Wickens fly through the air and endure a violent explosion, also took out Ryan Hunter-Reay, Takuma Sato, Pietro Fittipaldi, and Wickens' teammate James Hinchcliffe.

Hinchcliffe seemed to be in pain, grabbing his wrists as he slowly left his auto.

The race was red flagged, and drivers were allowed out of their cars while the fencing was repaired.

United States driver Graham Rahal - who crashed prior to the race's rolling start - tweeted his support during the lengthy delay.

Following the restart on Lap 12, the race ran under green-flag conditions to the finish. Pigot spun out and hit the wall. "But he knows running a race team, it's not easy just to put out a vehicle".

Rahal stayed on the track with a damaged Honda.

He also closed to within just 29 points of New Zealand's Scott Dixon, who leads the championship points race with 530 points. The only time Rossi surrendered the lead was through pit stop cycles, as he drove on to his fifth career win and first on an oval since his breakthrough victory as a rookie in the 2016 Indianapolis 500.

Dixon, who had only qualified 13th, had to weave his way through the debris.
