Bravo won two La Liga titles with Barcelona before moving to City in 2016, but an error-strewn first season provoked City to sign Brazilian Ederson from Benfica a year ago to take over as first-choice 'keeper.

City are rocked by news that Claudio Bravo will be injured for the long term, as he ruptured his Achilles on Monday in training.

No timescale has yet been put on the 35-year-old's return and he will now travel to Barcelona for specialist assessment later in the week. The Belgian is out for three months with knee ligament damage.

Pep Guardiola's team are still in the running for 3 cup competitions, and with the Premier League, Ederson will need rest.

Bravo arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Barcelona in August 2016 for a reported fee of £17million with a view to replacing Hart as the club's number one.

"He underwent scans this afternoon which have confirmed a rupture in the tendon of his left foot and will fly out to Barcelona for further tests on Thursday".

Bravo, a substitute in City's opening two Premier League matches, made just three top-flight appearances for the champions last season.

But City want a definitive assessment of Bravo's condition before deciding whether to recall Aro Muric, the Montenegro Under-21 worldwide, from his loan spell at NAC Breda or draft in a new goalkeeper alongside 20-year-old academy graduate Daniel Grimshaw.
