Coconut oil is poison says Harvard professor

In an educational talk titled Coconut oil and other nutritional errors, a professor from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health - Dr Karin Michels called the oil pure poison and one of the worst foods a person can possibly eat.

Her warnings come as a big shock as coconut oil is repeatedly being advertised as the multi-purpose oil which is the "ultimate" food for health.

What is coconut oil and what are the concerns?

That is the main drawback of coconut oil is its very fat.

According to data by American Heart Association (AHA), more than 80 per cent of the fat in coconut oil is saturated, which is far beyond butter (63 per cent), beef fat (50 per cent) and pork lard (39 per cent).

On an ancillary note, the relationship between LDL cholesterol levels and cardiovascular health is still a bit nuanced. Now we all have to think twice about coconut oil.

Coconut oil has always been seen to be useful to human well being as it is continuously used as therapy to nurture hair, cook and even as a moisturizer.

Does coconut oil have some health benefits? The fact that the level of medium-chain fatty acids in coconuts is only 14%, and the participants in those studies received 100% of the acids from food.
