DeSantis will be hoping to keep the GOP's gubernatorial streak in Florida alive heading into November.

Where does Andrew Gillum stand on key issues?

Graham, an establishment candidate and member of a Florida political dynasty - her father Bob Graham was once the state's governor and US senator - appeared to be a more centrist candidate who could appeal to independent voters in one of the most closely-watched gubernatorial races this cycle. He told Spectrum News he is expecting to "shock the political system". If he wins in November, the Sanders-backed candidate will become the first black governor in Florida's history. Gillum's victory shows that we can no longer be ignored or taken for granted. He easily won his primary, setting up a showdown with Democratic Sen.

DeSantis, who spent much of his campaign on Fox News defending Trump, beat out Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who had seemingly built up the run for governor his entire adult life after being elected to office as a 22-year-old.

DeSantis pegged his primary win on his support from Trump, with whom he has voted in the House 94 percent of the time, according to a CQ analysis.

Florida also will host one of the country's top US Senate races between term-limited Republican Governor Rick Scott, who won the Senate nomination against token opposition, and incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. Nelson ran unopposed for the nomination.

But Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Gillum at a point when the mayor was far behind in the polls, and who then barnstormed across the state with the Gillum, thinks the Democratic nominee has something that's more important than Trump's backing: people power.

An early underdog in a crowded field, the 39-year-old upset the Florida political establishment with the support of grass-roots Florida progressives and a coalition of groups like the Collective PAC, which is dedicated to elevating African-American candidates, Indivisible, an organization formed in response to President Donald Trump's election in 2016, and the Working Families Party.

McSally is seen as a stronger general election candidate than either Ward or Arpaio, both hard-line conservatives. McSally has already launched advertising aimed at her likely Democratic opponent in November, US Representative Kyrsten Sinema.
