The Times opinion section said the piece was written by a senior official in the administration and that it was taking the rare step of publishing an anonymous article because disclosing the author's identity would jeopardise the person's job.

The nearly 1,000-word opinion piece released Wednesday afternoon described "many senior officials' at high levels of the administration working to "frustrate parts of [President Trump's] agenda and his worst inclinations".

Cabinet-level officials - who said they were not directed by the White House to release statements refuting the op-ed - came out one by one, some via spokespersons, with criticism of the opinion piece and their own form of denial.

"I thought I would be more effective by retaining my public role then getting involved in either the treatment of those who were feeling scared or in the actual intervention with the President", she added.

She criticized the media's use of anonymous sources.

Sean Hannity, star presenter on Fox News - Trump's favorite cable network - denounced the op-ed as "irresponsible" and "dangerously" published.

Of the New York Times, he added: "They don't like Donald Trump and I don't like them because they're very dishonest people".

The former NY businessman and reality TV star has had an unusually high level of staff turnover and has sometimes publicly criticized his top aides.

What was lost in the Brazil National Museum fire
The destruction of the Brazilian National Museum stands as a stark warning to working people in Brazil and throughout the world. The most significant was the 11,500 year-old skull named Luzia , which was Latin America's oldest human fossil.

After the first, he double-faulted, and he wound up getting broken there. "I really don't think it's that hot, sorry". There were no breaks until 5-4 in the opening set, when Keys piled pressure on the Suarez Navarro serve.

Fierce document dispute grips Trump Supreme Court pick's hearing
Hillary Clinton tweeted that the federal court judge may be changing his tune on the 1973 decision legalizing abortion nationwide. If confirmed, Kavanaugh is expected to move the high court-which already had a conservative majority-further to the right.

Anonymous officials who have been quoted in previous news reports have often been identified as "a senior White House official", which narrows the scope to people working specifically for the White House - instead of the broad number of agencies within the Trump administration, such as the Department of Education.

The opinion piece comes a day after excerpts of Bob Woodward's book on the Trump White House suggested that his top officials have been engaged in an "administrative coup d'etat" to protect the nation from the president, including removing key documents from his desk before he has a chance to sign them.

Some say the essay was the pathetic "me too" effort by The New York Times to match the scoops in Woodward's book published in The Washington Post. And some of the most senior members of the Trump administration were forced to deny they were the author of the attack on their boss.

Colbert discussed the piece further with his guest, former secretary of state John Kerry, who said the implications of the article "scared the hell out of him".

The Times piece called some of Trump's decisions "half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless". I know the paper. The newspaper had no response to Trump's tweet that the identity be revealed for national security reasons. "If the GUTLESS anonymous person does indeed exist, the Times must, for National Security purposes, turn him/her over to government at once!"

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the book was "nothing more than fabricated stories, many by former disgruntled employees, told to make the president look bad".

After the chemical attack on Syrian civilians in April 2017, which prompted outrage across the world, Mr Trump reportedly said: "Let's f****** kill him!"

"We fully recognize what is happening", the anonymous author said.
