Fox News reports that Elon Musk and podcast host Joe Rogan were seen on camera during an interview smoking marijuana.

Rogan's podcast is known for being choppy and focused on a wide array of topics, but Musk's appearance was particularly wild, as the two went from discussing ancient weaponry to talking about the CEO's new electric plane design.

Musk then bends and says, "I mean it's legal, right?" before taking a drag.

The pair were more than two hours into a conversation fuelled by Old Camp whiskey on ice, ranging from expensive cars and watches to the dangers of artificial intelligence, before Rogan pulled out the joint and lit up.

After Morton's departure was announced, Tesla's head of HR, Gabrielle Toledano, told Bloomberg that she is not coming back from her leave of absence.

The appearance was the latest unorthodox move by Musk, who has often surprised investors with brash and unpredictable behavior as Tesla has sought to live up to lofty manufacturing targets for its Model 3 electric auto.

Earlier this week Musk escalated his baseless attacks against British diver Vernon Unsworth, claiming that the man who helped rescue children from a cave in Thailand was a "child rapist" in an email to a reporter. The entry of additional competitors and Tesla's failure to meet its goals are "certainly enough to cause investors to second-guess the company", he said.

At one point, Musk and Rogan shared a spliff, though Musk said doesn't make a habit of smoking weed, which he called "a cup of coffee in reverse".

As Musk examines Rogan's blunt, Rogan asks if people get upset at Musk when he does certain things.

Speaking of the what lies ahead, Musk said being forever constrained to Earth "would not be a good future". When asked if he'd ever had one, Musk replied that he thought he'd had one once.

"I think people should be nicer to each other", he said.

"I want to be clear that I believe strongly in Tesla, its mission, and its future prospects, and I have no disagreements with Tesla's leadership or its financial reporting", he added.

"There are so many rumours and problems about Tesla that we stay sceptical concerning the Tesla shares". But a lot of the "public attention" Tesla received during Morton's brief tenure was focused on the possibility of Tesla going private.
