She was placed on life support earlier today as her health deteriorated last night.

"The Pakistan High Commission in the United Kingdom has been directed to provide all possible assistance to facilitate the heirs of Mrs. Kulsoom Nawaz", his office said in a statement. She had the honour of serving as the first lady thrice in her lifetime.

"The wife of Mian Nawaz Sharif is no more among us. My condolences and prayers go to the Sharif family". She will be laid to rest at Jati Umra in Lahore however, day and time are yet to be revealed. When martial law was enforced and Nawaz Sharif was jailed, she stood bravely in the face of such dire circumstances and carried forward the party's struggle for democracy.

Nawaz Sharif was in London with Ms Sharif earlier this year when the anti-corruption court handed him a 10-year jail term and sentenced his presumed political heir, daughter Maryam, to seven years in prison over the purchase of luxury flats in London in the 1990s.

"Yes, the death of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz is confirmed", Maryam Aurangzeb, a spokesperson of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) told AFP.

This was reportedly the last time Nawaz Sharif had spoken to his wife. Referring to her mother's reign as PML-N chief, daughter Maryam once said that her mother had dauntlessly challenged a usurper when "most men did not".

"It is very unfortunate the way she was consumed all of a sudden by such an illness for a whole year and which caused so much suffering for the family". The couple had four children - two sons and two daughters.

During her husband's exile after the 1999 military coup by Pervez Musharraf, Kulsoom took over reins of the party and served as its president from 1999 to 2002.

Sharif, three-time prime minister, is now serving a 10-year jail term in Pakistan following his conviction by a court on corruption charges.
