The actor recently signed on to star in the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher series.

However, the suggestion is that this would mean Cavill is no longer able to play Superman, the DCEU's next big Superman-related project is Supergirl, which takes place when Superman is a child.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter that the British actor is parting ways with Warner Bros, after playing the Man Tomorrow in three movies for the studio. Cavill, reportedly, was unable to find time to appear in Shazam!, the upcoming comic-book movie starring Asher Angel and Zachary Levi, due for release in April 2019. "But contract talks between Cavill's WME reps and Warners broke down, and the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances". The latter two struggled at the box office and were panned by critics.

The news comes months after reports that Ben Affleck is making his way out of the DC Universe.

"THR added: "'There's a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn't work, ' says the studio insider.

It is thought that Warners are now shifting their strategy and focusing on standalone movies, including an upcoming Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story. Neither Cavill nor Warner Bros. have yet to confirm his departure. WB and DC are in the middle of basically pulling off a slow revamp of their cinematic universe since they screwed the whole damn thing up so much, and the Supergirl movie is their focus right now. "This effectively removes an actor of Cavill's age from the storyline's equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore".
