"I know there is a bit of good news but it kind of takes a slight bit of the edge off", Rose said. "I'm delighted to get to the top", he told Sky Sports.

It took him almost four years before he won for the first time and he went 12 years before winning on the PGA Tour.

However, a steady round proved not enough around a soaked Aronimink, with McIlroy's two-under 68 bettered by Rose, who shot a three-under 67, and eventual victor Bradley, whose six-under 64 took him into a play-off with the Englishman.

The PGA Tour has a rule called the "strength of field regulation", which requires golfers to either play 25 events in the current or previous season or add a new event in the current season (that they did not play in the prior season).

"The belly putter was a tougher transition than I thought, and I kind of fell off the radar there for a little while".

Woods booked his spot in the 30-man field at East Lake for the first time in five years after shooting a five-under 65 in the rain-delayed final round of the BMW Championship on Monday.

"I felt so calm out there today", he told the Golf Channel. This is significant because it's the first time Spieth has missed the Tour Championship as a professional, but it's also significant because Spieth will end the season with only 24 tournaments played.

On adding the achievement of becoming number one to his major title and the Olympic gold medal he won in 2016, Rose said: "That's obviously boyhood-dream stuff".

Pence confident no one on his staff wrote NY Times column
Trump, meanwhile, has denounced the Times opinion piece as "gutless" and its publication as a "disgrace" bordering on treason. The president has yet to say whether he'd go that far, but Pence says he'd be willing to submit to such an examination.

After Sunday's wet weather postponed the final round, overnight leader Rose got off to a shaky start in defence of his one-shot advantage with a bogey on the first hole. "And I don't think that would have been good enough".

Tiger Woods had a strong finish, leaving him with -17 overall, in a tie for sixth place.

"I turned pro at 18 and it took me 20 odd years to get to world No 1, but my advice would be to just dedicate yourself to improving, to learning, to trying to get better".

Mathematically, Woods still has a chance to win the FedEx Cup, although it would require several top players to lose form.

Jordan Spieth was the most prominent player to miss out.

Billy Horschel was tied with Bradley and Rose for the lead for the better part of the back nine on Monday before finishing with a 64 and in third place at 19 under along with Xander Schauffele (67).

The top 30 on a season-long points list advance to the Tour Championship in Atlanta starting on Thursday week.
