Even Police Minister Bheki Cele admitted that the country's murder rate was "scary" and compared it to a war-zone.

He said murders of girls, boys, and women have increased contributing 19.3% to the overall murder rate. "So I'm not really surprised", de Haas said.

"South Africans must not take it as a norm that they can be hijacked, robbed and killed every day".

Police committee chair Francois Beukman, who was shocked by this revelation, said that the figure was "unacceptable".

The release of the annual crime statistics in parliament on Tuesday painted a grim picture in the fight against crime for the men and women in blue in the province. One needs to probe if the police's detection rate is really having an impact and actually preventing crimes, such as robbery‚ or whether the cops are simply focusing more on crimes they can easily prevent.

There were eight each in Mpumalanga and Free State, seven in KwaZulu-Natal, and three each in the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

KwaZulu-Natal is the most unsafe province for women and children, as 20 per cent of the murders occurred withing KZN borders.

Umlazi in the south recorded the second highest number of reported rape cases in the country - at 252. "We need a better criminal justice system so that murderers are locked up and keys thrown away". Murder increased by 6.9% while attempted murder increased by only 0.2%.

Attacks on cash-transporting security vehicles rose sharply by 56.6 per cent to 238 cases.
