Mallya, earlier in the day, had told reporters outside London's Westminster Magistrates' Court, ahead of appearing for hearing in his extradition case, that he did not flee the country with public funds instead he offered a settlement deal to the government.

"It was a totally innocent statement made by me that I told Jaitley that I was going to London", Mallya said at the end of his extradition case hearing at the court, when the judge fixed December 10 as the date for verdict in the case.

Once again the finance minister chose Facebook to post his reaction in response to Mallya's bombshell.

However, in a series of tweets Finance Minister Arjun Jaitley labeled Mallya's claim as "false".

Before attending the Westminster Magistrates" Court, the former Kingfisher Boss was inundated with many journalist questions and to one of their asks, he said "I left because I had a scheduled meeting in Geneva.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi should immediately order an independent probe into Mallya's "extremely serious allegations" and Jaitley should step down while the investigation is underway.

Russia prepares for biggest war games in its history
Russia´s previous military exercise in the region, Vostok-2014, was nearly half the size, with 155,000 soldiers participating. The drills, however, allow Russian Federation to practice mobilizing and effectively transporting a large number of forces.

Jaitley, however, said he never gave Mallya an appointment after becoming a minister in 2014, but the liquor baron misused his position as an MP to accost him once in Parliament. "Sometimes it seems the airline was not owned by Mallya, but by the Gandhi family in proxy", Patra said, adding that Rahul Gandhi, who himself is out on bail (in the National Herald case), had no right to question others on corruption. That is the truth.' However, he did not mention that it was Arun Jaitley.

Rahul Gandhi also questioned Arun Jaitley's silence for nearly two-and-a-half years over his alleged meeting with Mallya.

"This is a totally unnecessary controversy created by friends in the media".

He said Mallya's claim is a vindication of the Congress's stand that the government always knew about the fleeing defaulters. I even did not receive any paper from him at that time. He was arrested by the Scotland Yard on an extradition warrant in April this year.

The lawyer further said, "There is no evidence that Mallya or Kingfisher applied for bank loans with bad intent".

Sinha's remarks came soon after Mallya, facing charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to around Rs 9,000 crore, said in London that he met the finance minister before leaving India previous year. It also seeks to prove there are no "bars to extradition" and that the tycoon is assured a fair trial in India over his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines' alleged default of over Rs 9,000 crores in loans from a consortium of Indian banks. "Do we need anymore proof that this govt.is in the pocket of crony capitalists".
