Inbox by Gmail isn't going away immediately - users will have until March 2019 to decide on an alternative.

Why it matters: Inbox by Google users will be disappointed to hear that the email client is being discontinued next year.

Now we have an official date for the app's end: Inbox by Gmail will be permanently out of office by the end of March 2019, the tech giant announced on Wednesday.

Google launched Inbox by Gmail about four years ago, presenting it as an email app to complement Gmail, changing the way users experience their digital mail.

But in an overhaul to Gmail this year, Google implemented numerous innovative features that were introduced in Inbox. This update brought more of Inbox's features to Gmail, adding to those that had already made their way across.

For me, Inbox was an attempt to simplify email and while it certainly had some interesting features, Inbox was too simplified and not really usable because of that. Back in the day, the Gmail app or desktop experience would come with limited options, making Inbox by Gmail a platform to create/expand on ideas.

The closure of Inbox was hinted at when Google rolled out the new Gmail to users earlier in the year. There are tons of email services and email apps that accompany them.

To help users using Inbox move back to Gmail proper, Google has supplied a transition guide on their support site. Fortunately, because Inbox requires a Gmail account to use, all the messages in their Inbox account are also still on Gmail.
