Naomi Osaka's star power in her U.S. Open victory may have been overwhelmed in the short-term by the ongoing Serena Williams controversy from their championship match.

Williams, who was seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title on Saturday, was given three code violations by chair umpire Carlos Ramos in her 6-2, 6-4 loss to Osaka.

"The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned by the WTA", Ings said on Tuesday, via ESPN.

Meanwhile, tennis umpires are also considering forming a union as they feel no one is standing up for them.

Williams, who called Ramos a "liar" and "thief" during the match she lost to Naomi Osaka, has alleged sexism played a role in the umpire docking her a game on Saturday.

The ugly incident reduced Osaka to tears, with NY fans launching into a continual chorus of boos after Williams demanded an apology from Ramos after he penalised her for being coached from the stands before branding him a "thief" for treating her differently to male players. "Mr. Ramos" decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were re-affirmed by the US Open's decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offences, ' read the statement released by ITF.

"If talking to the media is not allowed, and governing bodies are speaking out against them, what are umpires supposed to do?" another source said.

The Women's Tennis Association made a similar argument, claiming that men and women professional tennis players are treated differently by umpires. They're thinking, "What if?'"

Almost 3,000 people died in the attacks on 9/11, when global terrorism hit home in a way it previously hadn't for many Americans. In December, a would-be suicide bomber set off a pipe bomb in a subway passageway near Times Square, authorities said.

Williams was given a code violation warning during the final on September 8 when the umpire ruled that she was getting hand signals from her coach in the stands.

"#Amul Topical: Ms William's tantrums in US Open finals!" read the tweet posted along with a picture that featured the moment where Williams and Carlos Ramos were involved in a heated verbal argument.

"Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis", the ITF statement said.

"He never took a game from a man because he said 'thief, '" Williams said.

Williams fans in the crowd, angry over her exchange with the umpire, continued to boo.

He is expected to be on duty as planned for this week's Davis Cup semi-final in Zadar where Croatia are hosting the United States.

His appearance could prove awkward after several figures from the US Tennis Association, including president Katrina Adams, publicly supported Williams in her sexism allegations.
