Hurricane Florence Reduces Its Intensity But Not Its Destructive Power

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for the Peninsula, including Williamsburg, James City County and York County, as Hurricane Florence nears landfall in the Carolinas. An order that many families, like Scott's, have made a decision to ignore. Most of the damage during Hurricane Matthew in 2016 in North Carolina came from inland flooding - 31 people died and almost 100,000 homes were destroyed. It's expected to move slowly over eastern SC on Friday night through Saturday night. She plans to continue to ride out the storm.

It added the greatest threats to life came from storm-surges while "catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding" was expected, with some areas receiving up to 40 inches of rainfall.

The path of Hurricane Florence sees it going over some of the poorest areas on the eastern seaboard.

The East Coast isn't the only area facing the brunt of a storm. "Everybody laughs at the fact that this storm got downgraded. but I've never seen tree devastation this bad".

The police chief of Wrightsville Beach, vulnerable on a North Carolina barrier island, agreed that those who refused to leave were now on their own. "We have an old jail building, and there was a sally port where vehicles could drive down into it", she says.
