The Serb now only trails Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (17).

Djokovic continued a remarkable summer after missing the end of last season with a right elbow injury. But it is arguably his sensational 2008 Wimbledon final win over Federer which stands out as his most memorable triumph.

Del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champion, remains with that lone major title.

An eight-time finalist in NY who had only previously lifted the trophy in 2011 and 2015, the Serbian was made to work hard on Sunday as Del Potro came from a break down in the second and third sets.

Djokovic was far superior to del Potro in the opening set, then dropped three consecutive games in the second to trail 4-3.

A visit to the court from tournament referee Brian Earley and grand slam supervisor Donna Kelso failed to diffuse the situation and, having led 3-1 in the second set, a rattled Williams lost it completely as she went down 4-3. But then he was broken in his next game.

Playing in the same era as two of the finest players in history may be seen as a negative but Djokovic says it has spurred him on and ensured he has taken his game to new heights.

"Pete Sampras is one of the biggest legends ever to play the game", Djokovic said after earning a third US Open crown. Kevin Anderson of South Africa fell four spots to ninth in the rankings after he losing to eighth-placed Dominic Thiem of Austria in the US Open round of 16.

Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 to win the U.S. Open junior boys championship.

Newly-crowned US Open champions Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka have jumped up in the recent tennis rankings. Ahead of the final, Del Potro had fired 68 aces during the tournament, winning 82 percent of his first serve points.

The first violation given to Williams was for coaching, which isn't allowed during any men's matches but is permitted on the women's tour except in grand slam tournaments. Barty and Vandeweghe won the second set tiebreaker 7-2 and won the third 8-6 to win for the second time in four meetings this season against Babos and Mladenovic. He has since won seven more at SW19, as well as six Australian Opens, five US Opens, and one French Open.

"I don't feel sad that I couldn't win Grand Slams because of them".

The Serbian has completed a remarkable comeback from injury and after winning at Wimbeledon earlier in the year he has won back-to-back Grand Slams for the first time since 2016.

Del Potro was unable to stop the rejuvenated Djokovic, but there was plenty of love in the air afterwards at Flushing Meadows - where both players praised each other.

And yet, after the events that unfolded in Saturday's women's final at Flushing Meadow, no one - not the players, the officials, administrators, the fans or the sport itself - emerged as a victor.

Djokovic pulled into a tie with American Pete Sampras on the all-time men's leaderboard in majors and now only trails his two contemporaries and greatest rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
