Ozil has become a bit of a conundrum for Emery after the club's highest-paid player got off to a slow start to the season, which was also interrupted by an illness that fuelled rumours of a rift between the two.

Attentions will now turn to the return of the Premier League and Arsenal's players reported back to London Colney to begin their preparations for Saturday's trip to Newcastle United.

Arsenal manager Emery said he enjoyed a "relaxing" three days with Ozil in training after the player's retirement from worldwide football meant he did not depart with the Germany squad last week.

"I can say that I am very happy with him because he is 32 years old but I think physically, with his performances with us in matches, he is playing with a very good level".

The Magpies might be able to welcome 26-year-old Shelvey back to their side this weekend, with his absence having been evident in Newcastle's recent games. But Emery is hoping the extra rest and training sessions during the worldwide break - the first since Ozil announced his retirement from Germany - will help the star midfielder find his feet again.

Rafael Benitez believes Unai Emery was the ideal candidate to succeed Arsene Wenger.

Yet, despite being handed a hugely lucrative new contract until 2021 in January, he has also struggled to make an impact since Emery took over at Arsenal in June.

New coach Unai Emery doesn't want to let him leave, though, given his form at the start of the season.

"Every conversation with him is speaking about us and about our work here every day", he said.
