Chequers is much worse than status quo, says Boris Johnson

Brexit-supporting lawmakers in British Prime Minister Theresa May's party called on her to change course on Brexit but said they supported her remaining as leader.

He told ITV News: "I've been told that she will get a full appraisal of comments that were made over the dinner".

Mr Johnson is likely to upstage Mrs May at the Conservative Party conference next month in Birmingham when he makes a speech the day before the Prime Minister delivers her keynote speech. On Wednesday she told MPs that if there was no deal, the payment of the €40-billion-plus "divorce" bill could be withheld: "Without a deal, the position changes", May said.

"We have looked at a significant number of potential solutions and we believe that the plan put forward by Chequers is the only credible and negotiable one".

Condemning the proposals aimed at resolving the Northern Irish border issue, Mr Johnson said: "We have opened ourselves to perpetual political blackmail".

This comes as Johnson's Daily Mail column received criticism from within the party after describing Mrs May's Brexit strategy as a "suicide vest".

A debate in Parliament has been triggered by a petition signed by nearly 200,000 people arguing that the Article 50 notice to leave the European Union should be withdrawn due to Brexit campaign Vote Leave's overspending.

"Of all the years that I've sat in this chair, this coming year is one of the most hard to give guidance on because there is this uncertainty of the Brexit outcome", Associated British Foods finance director John Bason told Reuters.
