Microsoft Wages War on Rival Browsers

"Microsoft Edge is the faster, safer browser on Windows 10 and is already installed on your PC", it says - just in case you forgot in the seconds between double-clicking the Edge icon and typing your search for something better. For example, even after you install Chrome or Firefox, the Settings dialog won't let you make either your default browser without asking you to check out Edge first.

This change is part of Windows 10's October 2018 update, which was looking pretty good until now. "The Verge however, speculates that Microsoft is only testing this 'warning" prompt and it won't necessarily be there in the final October 2018 update.

As per the report, this new feature was not "documented" in the company's various blog post. Microsoft tried a identical push to force Windows 10 Mail users to exercise Edge for all electronic mail hyperlinks, but the corporate reversed the alternate after a backlash.

Microsoft's warning prompts aren't just irritating: they also build an odd air of distrust.

All is fair in love and browser wars. Unlike the previous suggestions of Edge browser in Windows 10, the goal of this is rather controversial as the idea is to convince users to stick with Microsoft Edge. After testing popular websites like YouTube, Facebook, Wikipedia and Amazon, the Edge browser lasted seven hours and 22 minutes on a Surface Book system. "If I wanted to use your browser, I would".

Twenty-three years ago, Microsoft introduced Internet Explorer to the world, and began bundling it with its Windows 95 operating system as the default web browser. Another Twitter user reported the same behavior with Chrome, Vivaldi, Opera and Firefox browsers. According to the test, the lower pull translates to the longer battery life.

The prompt also echoes the Internet Explorer bundling that got Microsoft in trouble almost two decades ago. The issue that Google and Firefox may take with this warning is that the wording insinuates that the other two browsers are less safe than Edge.

While the warning does not block the installation, it is a blatant move from Microsoft to try and stop users from downloading a rival's Web browser.
