Manuela Schar also set a world record while winning the women's wheelchair race in 1:36:53.

"I hope to come back next year and break the course record yet again", she concluded.

Ahead of the race, Kipchoge, the defending Berlin champion, denied wanting to have a crack at fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto's world record, saying he was merely after a personal best, but he left little doubt about his intentions when the starting gun fired in ideal running conditions in Berlin.

At long last, the missing piece from Eliud Kipchoge's incredible résumé has been filled.

He has now won 11 out of 12 marathons he raced in, including at the Olympics.

The fastest German was Valentin Harwardt with 2:19:54.

The world record was previously held by Dennis Kimetto.

His three pacemakers were pushed to the limit to keep the tempo high as Kipchoge dipped well below world-record time at the halfway mark.

But even after the last pacemaker peeled off after 25 kilometres, Kipchoge showed no sign of slowing, passing the 30km mark in 1:26:45, with a pace of 2:52 per 1,000 metres, with thousands of Berliners lining the streets and egging him on. The only question was how far inside Kimetto's record he would get.

"It was hard", Kipchoge said.

With his 1:18 demolition of the previous record on Sunday- almost three seconds faster per mile than Kimetto's mark- Kipchoge has now reached a summit that seems befitting of a man who has rarely been challenged in the event.

Kipchoge became the new world record holder after running 2:01:39 to establish himself as one of the best distance runners in history.

He finished second in Berlin a few months later behind Wilson Kipsang, a fellow Kenyan who needed to set what was then a world record to outlast Kipchoge in the final miles. It certainly will go down as one of greatest spectacles the sport of running has ever seen, and will likely be a record that will stand for many years to come in the marathon.

During the 2016 Olympic games in Rio, Kipchoge won a gold medal in the marathon, having previously claimed silver in Beijing 2008 and bronze in Athens 2004 both in the 5000m.
