"With science still under attack and the climate threat growing, we're launching our own damn satellite", he said.

California is the second USA state after Hawaii to commit to carbon-free energy.

Seventeen states and 400 cities, representing together the world's third largest economy, have now joined Brown and summit co-chair and UN special envoy for climate action Michael Bloomberg's "We're Still In" commitment to honor the terms of the Paris agreement despite President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw, and Bloomberg announced at the summit Thursday that the group was making progress, The Nation reported.

"I'm a graduate student and so I think it's really important as well to have students and young folks involved", she said.

As Typhoon Mangkhut and Hurricane Florence threaten to barrel through the Philippines and the USA, respectively, climate activists are demanding government leaders and businesses at the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) to commit to ending fossil fuel extraction.

The three-day GCAS attracted more than 4,500 representatives from leaders of governments and businesses, regions, cities, investors and civil organizations on topics of climate change that impacts hugely on the future of both the globe and human existence.

"If the overall movement of the world is up and determined to address the Paris Agreement, then those governments that are less enthusiastic are likely to find themselves on the wrong side of history, and likely to find themselves on the wrong side of what the planet and the people living on it actually need- which is a low carbon/de-carbonised world with all kinds of new job opportunities and all kind of new sectors".

Initial funding for the project has been provided by philanthropists Dee and Richard Lawrence and their Overlook International Foundation as well as The Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham Environmental Trust, it said.

Trump said the worldwide agreement was unfair to the United States and would hurt the economy.

Hurricane Florence leaves hundreds of thousands without power in North Carolina
Florence is now a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour (177 kph), according to the U.S. Emergency diesel generators at both plants operated as designed, and off-site power was restored within 24 hours.

"This is still a very, very risky storm, not only on the coast but also in the interior of the state", said South Carolina Gov. The National Weather Service is forecasting "significant" river flooding, especially in the northeastern portion of the state.

Some of the forecasts called for a storm surge of nine to 16 feet, and Harvey wondered where all of that water would collect. The rainfall will produce life-threatening flash flooding in Virginia and the Carolinas.

According to a survey conducted by the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), 57% of participating cities are planning some sort of climate action in the coming year, and 60% have launched or expanded a climate policy in the last 12 months.

A few days prior to the launch of GCAS, Brown signed a historic bill that would ensure carbon-free electricity for the whole state of California by 2045.

The summit's goal is to have cities, countries and private industries work to more than double that reduction by 2025.

At the summit, Brown extracted dozens of new promises from states, cities and businesses to cut their own carbon pollution. Promises were made to green ports, protect forests, and invest in battery storage for renewable power. "They just like us to go a little faster and we would like to go a little faster ourselves".

But that is not the end of the road for the Global Climate Action Summit, the idea is to keep up the momentum.

"This is a transformation that is called for that we will get to", said Brown.

"You don't snap your fingers and say now it's done", Brown said.

This culminated with its inclusion in the Paris Agreement outcome where countries welcomed the efforts of these actors to scale up their climate actions and encouraged the registration of these actions on NAZCA.
