Massive waves were reported on coasts, while heavy rain triggered extensive flooding in the special administrative region, (SAR) as well as in nearby Macau before the storm rumbled on to Guangdong province and across the Pearl River Delta.

Authorities in southern China issued a red alert, the most severe warning, as the national meteorological center said the densely populated region would face a "severe test caused by wind and rain" and urged officials to prepare for possible disasters.

All schools in the city, including six universities, will be shut tomorrow. In China, all flights at Guangzhou International Airport were canceled from midday Sunday through Monday morning.
