Arizona Republican Senator Jeff Flake, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said Prof Ford's testimony should be heard. She also said that "Judge Kavanaugh should also testify as to these 36-year-old allegations".

"The standard procedure for updates to any nominee's background investigation file is to conduct separate follow-up calls with relevant parties", said the statement.

Christine Blasey Ford, a professor of psychology at Palo Alto University, detailed her allegations in the Washington Post at the weekend.

Katz described Ford's recollection of the incident in stark terms, going as far as saying her client considered it an attempted rape.

"I talked to [Kavanaugh] on the phone today...[he said] he didn't do that, and he wasn't at the party", Hatch said. After his confirmation, in an ABC News / Washington Post poll, 62% of Americans said Thomas should have been confirmed compared to 34% who said he should not.

Ford said she kept silent about the alleged incident until she was in couples' therapy with her husband in 2012.

Before the allegations against Kavanaugh became public, Blunt touted Kavanaugh's personal background in a speech on the Senate floor earlier this month and criticized Democratic efforts to slow his nomination.

Kavanaugh was seen Monday morning arriving at the White House, which has stood by the judge in the face of the accusations.
