Shootout at Mexico city tourist plaza claims three and injures 7

A foreign man was among nine people who were injured in the incident at the Plaza Garibaldi in the capital's historic downtown, the city prosecutor's office said in a statement, without disclosing identities of any of the victims.

Police are questioning two people after a group of men in mariachi outfits opened fire at a Mexico City restaurant, killing five people, an official with the city's Secretary of Public Security Office told CNN on Sunday.

Similar festivities planned for two cities in Guerrero and another in Guanajuato were canceled due to recent violence, local media said.

People at Plaza Garibaldi screamed and ran when they heard shots around 10 p.m. on Friday, although some appeared initially unfazed by the barrage of gunfire. Four people died initially and a fifth died of her wounds at a hospital Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

Local media reported late Friday that assailants were dressed in the traditional mariachi garb of short embroidered jackets and trousers.

The shootings happened just as the Mexican capital was kicking off independence day weekend celebrations.

It is also the busiest time of year for Plaza Garibaldi, a beloved but seedy square that draws heavily on Mexican folklore.

The roots of mariachi music in Mexico City can be traced to a bar that dominates one side of the plaza. Mariachi musicians returned to the square around the same time the shooting took place a day prior.

"We haven't had any reservations cancelled and we continue to book tables", he said.

Garibaldi Plaza borders the gritty Tepito neighbourhood, home to the Union Tepito gang that has been extorting businesses across the capital.

In 2013, USA civil rights leader Malcolm X's grandson, Malcolm Shabazz, was beaten to death near the square after a dispute over a nightclub bill.

"It was not random", he said.
