Ahead of the return of the Champions League, Griezmann was asked if he felt like he now sat at the top table alongside Messi and Ronaldo and the Atletico Madrid forward responded confidently.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has hit out at Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann following the Frenchman's claims that he is on a level with his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as his perennial rival Lionel Messi. I'm at the top but I can improve.

"Ignorance is bliss, whenever I hear this kid speak I think of the likes of [Francesco] Totti, [Gianluigi] Buffon, Iker [Casillas], Raul, [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi and so on who have their homes full of trophies and don't have a Ballon D'Or".

The claim was made in reference to winning the 2018 FIFA World Cup, in which the Atleti star was left flabbergasted by having no French representatives up for the prestigious honour.

"In the past year he was, without doubt, the best player in the world", Simeone said after naming off all the trophies and accomplishments Griezmann won during 2018.

Julen Lopetegui's side are chasing a fourth consecutive European triumph but they will be without Ronaldo, who scored 15 goals in last year's competition and joined Juventus in the summer.

"We can not dwell on what he did in the past". It's a big gap but it's being filled by players with awesome talent. "We respect him and wish him all the best". "Real Madrid start from zero every season".

"I was quite bad", he said. "Cris gave us a lot and took away very little".

"Now we have to adapt to another style, we have more possession and another way to hurt our opponents and that is what we have to exploit".
