Trump says no Federal Bureau of Investigation probe needed on Supreme Court pick

After Republicans postponed Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation vote scheduled for Thursday in order to hear from the woman accusing him of sexual assault, discussions began about how the Senate Judiciary Committee should approach Christine Blasey Ford's testimony. Sen.

US President Donald Trump stood firmly by his Supreme Court pick Brett Kavanaugh on Monday after allegations that the conservative judge sexually assaulted a woman when they were teenagers threatened to derail the nomination process.

"He is such an outstanding man, it is very hard for me to imagine anything happened", Trump said of his nominee.

Kavanaugh and Mark Judge, a witness Blasey named, have denied the accusation.

"We're the people who look at the data and say: 'That's not what the data is saying, '" she said.

"We would welcome the opportunity to talk with you and Ranking Member Feinstein to discuss reasonable steps as to how Dr. Ford can cooperate while also taking care of her own health and security", the letter from Ford's lawyers said.

He added, "It's a bad thing that took place, and it's frankly a awful thing that this information wasn't given to us a long time ago". In the last decade, we have seen the Supreme Court legalize gay marriage, reshape campaign finance laws and uphold the Affordable Care Act and Trump's travel ban.

The letter said that Ford has faced "vicious harassment and even death threats" since going public with her allegations on Sunday.

"I understand that I have been identified by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford as the person she remembers as "PJ" who supposedly was present at the party she described in her statements to the Washington Post", the letter, penned by Smyth's attorney, Eric Bruce, reads.

"We will not sit by and let Republicans use this hearing to attack, undermine and shame Ford", declared UltraViolet executive director Shaunna Thomas.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee who was first informed of Ford's accusation in July when the woman requested anonymity, denounced Republicans' efforts to limit the hearing to two witnesses.

Republicans are seeking to ensure Kavanaugh receives Senate approval this month, before the Supreme Court resumes deliberations October 1. Judge says he won't appear before the committee. Both Kavanaugh and Ford were called to testify before the committee on Monday, but Ford says she wants an FBI investigation first.

Grassley said Wednesday that he is still seeking to get Ford to testify Monday either in "any format she's comfortable [with]", but tweeted that "no other OUTSIDE investigation is necessary".
