Amazon is considering opening as many as 3,000 locations of its cashierless stores across the United States by 2021, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The e-commerce giant may open as many as 3,000 such stores by 2021, according to the report.

The first AmazonGo store in downtown Seattle-which opened to the public back in January-reportedly cost over $1 million in hardware alone, says an unnamed source speaking with Bloomberg. The store offers consumers a cashier-free shopping experience and tracks purchases through video cameras and sensors in store shelves. Amazon's other brick-and-mortar initiatives include about 20 bookstores around the U.S. and the natural grocery chain Whole Foods Market, acquired past year.

In the past, Amazon has shown that it likes to use these stores to peddle other products that also benefit its media initiatives. An Amazon spokeswoman declined to comment.

"We have no plans to open 2,000 of anything", a spokesperson said a few days after the newspaper's story published.

Speculation of a widespread rollout of Amazon Go isn't the first time the company has been rumored to have plotted a massive expansion into brick-and-mortar stores.

According to people familiar with the matter, the company could have 10 locations running by the end of the year and as many as 50 in 2019. Amazon also routinely loses money expanding internationally.

The fourth Amazon Go store just opened, but a new report claims a lot more could be on the horizon.

The US now has 155,000 convenience stores, with 122,500 of them combined with gas stations, according to industry group NACS. Some of the most recent Amazon Go locations feature only the prepared-food section without a grocery selection. The target locations make it less of a threat to suburban gas station-convenience store combinations and more of a threat to big cities' quick-service eateries, such as Subway Restaurants, Panera Bread Co. and Pret a Manger. Los Angeles and NY have already been rumoured as cities to host Amazon Go stores. Its key feature is a complete lack of lines to wait in. "It's too far away".
