We've already seen a few images from the set, but this story is set years before Joker became Batman's eternal adversary.

Phillips had previously shared a portrait of Phoenix in character, but crucially, without the Joker makeup. Now that the film is in production and director Todd Phillips has released some interesting glimpses at Joaquin Phoenix's character Arthur Fleck, some fans have begun to warm up to the more grounded comic book movie.

The eerie vibe from the camera test does give us a hint of the dark tale ahead but we're still curious about Batman's role in the film not being confirmed yet. The short video nearly plays like a teaser trailer, with The Guess Who's song, Laughing, playing in the background. Leto and Nicholson's Jokers developed their odd looks after a mishap at a chemical plant, while Ledger's take was more realistic, with actual war paint smeared on his face.

Scroll through the slideshow below or continue to the article for a look back at each modern movie Joker's first look photo and how they were revealed. It could be that this is Joker in an earlier part of his personal transformation, given that this film is an origin story.

Joker is set for release October 4, 2019, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros.
