Authorities said the shooting erupted Thursday morning after the worker got into an argument, sending screaming workers running from the Rite Aid distribution center after it ended.

A 26-year-old woman open fired in a warehouse in the U.S. state of Maryland, killing three people and wounding several others before taking her own life, according to authorities and a witness account.

She was in critical condition and later died at a local hospital, police said.

She shot her first victim outside, police said, before re-entering the building where she continued shooting.

The fact that the assailant was a woman marked an unusual circumstance in and of itself as the overwhelming majority of mass shootings in the United States are committed by men.

Sheriff Gahler said Moseley was diagnosed with a mental illness in 2016, and her family said she had become "increasingly agitated" over the past couple of weeks. They said she fatally shot herself.

Susan Henderson, spokesman for the drugstore chain Rite Aid, described the warehouse as a support facility adjacent to a larger building.

"The distribution centre is where products are received and processed for delivery".
