TSN's Josh Lewenberg notes that if the Toronto Raptors wanted to make a play for Butler, it would be hard because they would have to send out at least $15.8 million in salary and can not trade a first-rounder until 2021's selection. Butler can sign a more lucrative contract next summer.

According to ESPN, Minnesota has signed the 2015 No. 1 overall pick to a five-year super-max extension worth $190 million.

Minnesota acquired Butler a year ago from head coach Tom Thibodeau's former team, the Chicago Bulls. No matter what happens with Butler, Minnesota will have one of the league's top young talents under contract for the foreseeable future.

So far, few franchises, if any, are engaged in serious conversations with the Timberwolves on Butler, sources said.

Butler had requested a trade out of Minnesota even with training camp about to start on Tuesday, September 25.

Despite Butler's request, the Minnesota front office has shut down all inquiries toward Butler and is saying they intend to keep him. Thibodeau, a relentless competitor, would rather hang onto Butler. Taylor, who was involved with trades surrounding Kevin Garnett and Kevin Love, plans to avoid that.

This has disaster written all over it, and also is the exact reason Butler is getting traded. Whether that's due to some sort of undisclosed injury, or simply a personal decision by Butler not to participate is not clear.

The Clippers have expressed interest in Butler, but have no interest in parting with prized rookie Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

For the Los Angeles Clippers, this may work out better in their favor. None of those apply for Butler's current team. It would come as no surprise if this process plays out in a similar fashion to how the Kawhi Leonard saga ended, with Butler going to a team not on his list of preferred destinations.

Thibodeau is less inclined to trade Butler, especially in a scenario that would imperil the franchise's ability to reach the playoffs for a second straight year after missing the postseason the previous 13 seasons, league sources said.

Dinwiddie had a breakout season previous year, finishing third in the voting for Most Improved Player. Maybe Butler should focus on being a better player and not his teammates.
