"We are in contact with the USA authorities so that they can keep us informed little by little as to what has happened exactly", he said.

The young golfer was a native of Spain and played at Iowa State University.

The suspect's bond has been set at $5 million.

Huff declined to say whether Richards had attempted to disrobe her. He added that her teammates were having difficulty coping with her death.

The next day, Barquin Arozamena didn't make it to classes because she couldn't find them. She's really special to me.

Barquin's body was found on Monday at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames.

Barquín was golfing alone, and the unusual site of an abandoned golf bag led to the discovery of her body, Huff said. Ames police said she had been "assaulted". Police said the 22-year-old was stabbed and left in a pond on the golf course.

At around 2 p.m., police encountered Richards, who had "several fresh scratches on his face consistent with a fight", according to Commander Geoff Huff, and was also attempting to hide a laceration on his left hand. Those two individuals were driving Richards out of town, but he asked them to drop him off near the camp so he could get his tent.

Richards was released from prison in June after serving about seven months for violating his probations for several crimes he committed in Guthrie County, including an incident in January 2015 at a convenience store in Bayard.

Story County Attorney Jessica Reynolds told the Des Moines Register newspaper that the state believed Richards to be a "flight risk" and "a danger to the community".

In Barquin Arozamena's hometown in Spain, women wept in the streets and flags flew at half-staff. In our room, we had a flag that was half Spanish and half American, which a relative of hers had sewed together.

Barquin was one of the most decorated and successful golfers in Iowa State history.

Athletic Director Jamie Pollard was overcome with emotion as he addressed the media Tuesday on losing a member of the Cyclone family. "Our Cyclone family mourns the tragic loss of Celia, a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador".

Barquin, an engineering student, was the Big 12 women's golf champion this year. A friend had given her his number in the middle of a party, and Celia, always impulsive, had called him straight away. "We are deeply saddened".

"We are all devastated", said Christie Martens, head coach of the Iowa State women's golf team.

"Celia was a handsome person who was loved by all her team-mates and friends".

The college website that funeral arrangements for her are pending.
