Tiger Woods admitted he was struggling to deal with his emotions late on his way to a first win in more than five years at the Tour Championship.

ATLANTA, GA - SEPTEMBER 23: Tiger Woods of the United States celebrates making a par on the 18th green to win the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club on September 23, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. But by the end of the tournament, Woods' odds had been trimmed to 9-1, ahead of Spieth's, at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas.

"To win it's certainly up there with obviously all the major championships I've won, Players, World Golf Championships but then this is under different circumstances". Webb Simpson, Johnson Wagner and Louis Oosthuizen were the only three to have a better average.

He was thrilled to be healthy again, recovered from the spinal damage that derailed his transcendent career, forcing four operations over three years and long absences from competitive golf, including virtually all of 2016 and '17.

Six birdies in the first seven holes of his third round helped Woods to a five-under 65, opening up a three-shot lead over Rory McIlroy heading in to Sunday.

Woods still had an outside shot at the FedEx Cup if he were to win, though he would need Rose to post a big number on the back nine.

Jimmy Garropolo Left With An Apparent Knee Injury Against The Chiefs
Garoppolo went down holding his left knee and remained on the field for about a minute before being helped to the sideline. Garoppolo took a big hit up high, but the damage appeared to be a non-contact injury before he took the hit.

Woods, who finished with an 11-under-par aggregate 269, raised his arms in delight after the victory, with several thousand fans ringing the green roaring their appreciation. And it was his first victory in more than five years, dating to the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational.

The victory moves him to second on the all-time PGA winners list behind Sam Snead (82). I just can't believe I pulled this off after I've gone through. Rose's 18-hole birdie gave him a tie for fourth and shut down the Tour Championship winner's hopes of another FedEx Cup title.

However Woods has progressed steadily during his comeback season, leading the British Open during the final round in July before finishing second at last month's PGA Championship.

A blemish free front nine ensured that Woods held his advantage midway through the final round, couple with a +1 from Rose, while a double bogey on the seventh from McIlroy saw the Northern Irishman drop out of title contention altogether.

Rose entered the week ranked No. 2 on the FedEx Cup point list, which meant if he could win at East Lake, he automatically would win the FedEx Cup as well. The 42-year-old has 14 major championships.

2002: In December, Woods has a benign cyst removed and fluid drained from around one of the ligaments in the same knee.
