Labour split over inclusion of Remain option in second Brexit referendum

He joined the chorus of union and Labour figures calling for a general election, saying a Government led by Jeremy Corbyn would strike a deal with EU leaders that would unite the nation.

David Lammy, one of the Labour MPs pushing for a new "people's vote", said "thousands" of people marching for a second referendum did not do so "to be offered a farcical referendum on "no deal" or "a bad deal".

That may well win favour with well-heeled London-based members of the party, who overwhelmingly voted to stay in the bloc.

'If we can't make democracy work in Labour, we can't make it work in the rest of society'.

Labour activists have waved through sweeping changes to the party rulebook that could trigger waves of deselection of Jeremy Corbyn's (pictured last night) critics.

Len McCluskey, leader of the Unite trade union, a powerful Labour ally, said British voters had made a decision to leave the EU and "for us now to enter some kind of campaign that opens up that issue again I think would be wrong".

Corbyn has always been more interested in ending austerity in Britain and launching an economic programme to reverse cuts he says have hurt the poor for the benefit of the "super rich".

The decision comes amid the party's annual conference now taking place in Liverpool, with Brexit dominating the agenda.

The Labour party is to consider campaigning for a second Brexit vote if there's no general election.

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said Jeremy Corbyn should be succeeded by a woman.

Should Labour judge May's plans to have negative outcome in response to the above questions, then the party is likely to vote down her Chequers plan in the commons.

After being pushed on whether Remain would be on the ballot paper, if Labour did back a second referendum, he responded: "I think the sensible thing is to keep those options on the table".

According to the Associated Press, the shadow chancellor said that "we argued for "remain" in the past but we lost that vote so we have to respect that".

For those pressing for a second referendum, or a People's Vote, the motion was little more than a fudge.

At Labour's annual conference in the northern city of Liverpool, Corbyn, who in 1975 voted "No" to Britain's membership of the then-European Community, said he would act on the result of a debate in Labour on a second Brexit vote.

The wording of the referendum question would be for Parliament to decide but he added: "If we are going to respect the referendum it will be about the deal".

"There are 5 million Labour Leavers in the country who will look upon this motion with dismay".

Brexit minister Dominic Raab again ruled out a new vote, describing the suggestion as "for the birds".

Even in the North and Midlands, where many Labour constituencies voted Leave in 2016, there was overwhelming support - 86% and 88% respectively - for a second vote.

But Richard Corbett, the leader of Labour MEPs, told a separate meeting attended by Starmer this afternoon that people should have the right to stop Brexit. "I think the time for vagueness is over", she said.
