A teen boy was attacked by a shark off Beacon's Beach in Encinitas Saturday morning, witnesses told FOX 5. He was conscious and talking on the beach, Giles said, as well as on his way to the hospital. Luckily, the boy was immediately taken aboard a kayak by several people who were lobster fishing nearby, including an off-duty police officer and an off-duty lifeguard.

Speaking to CBS, Giles added: "We are working closely as a unified command with the California State Parks, California Fish and Game, San Diego County Sheriff's Department, City of Solana Beach and the City of Carlsbad to ensure public safety".

Encinitas Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles said that, despite suffering traumatic injuries and being in a critical condition, the boy is expected to survive.

Chad Hammel, who was also diving for lobster, helped rescue the boy and pull him into his kayak.

Emergency responders arrived, and the boy was flown by helicopter to the trauma center. At first he thought it was the excited yell of a fellow lobster diver.

A boy, 13, was diving for lobsters when he was attacked by a shark off the southern Californian coast.

The waters off about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) of beach were ordered closed for 48 hours, and a nearby surfing competition was canceled before it got underway.

Since the incident, there hasn't been any shark activity, according to Giles.

There have been no other reports of shark sightings and officials are unsure what type of shark attacked the boy, though it was estimated to have been about 11 feet long.
