Internationally, Venom earned $125.2 million, making for a total pull of $205.2 million.

"Venom" came in a critically panned, much-doubted foray by Sony Pictures to kick-start a Marvel expansion away from "Spider-Man".

The Oscar-bait Warner Bros. release starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, which also marks his directorial debut, took in an impressive $4.6 million so far (counting Thursday previews and special screenings earlier in the week).

That's thanks to BOTH Sony's "Venom" and Warner Bros.'s "A Star Is Born". That easily set a new October record, topping the "Gravity" debut of $55.7 million.

Sony is hoping "Venom" will launch a shared universe similar to Disney's lucrative superhero franchise.

The fourth iteration of "A Star Is Born", directed by Bradley Cooper, arrived in theaters amid a wave of positive buzz and an awards campaign that's gained traction since its debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 5. That's an global record for an October opening, Variety reports.

It's kind of a shame "A Star Is Born" didn't open last week, when "Night School" made headlines for topping the box office with only $28 million.
