From 6-6 at halftime, the Boks scored 17 points in the first 12 minutes of the second half, with tries by Jesse Kriel and center partner Damian de Allende, and flyhalf Handre Pollard adding the conversions and a penalty. However, tries to Rieko Ioane, Scott Barrett and then Savea saw the All Blacks come home with a wet sail.

The Springboks led 30-13 and even New Zealand with their fearsome finishing power looked as if their lungs had finally burst on the High Veldt.

"You have got to have belief and we had that deep down to come back".

Down 23-6, New Zealand responded with a score by scrumhalf Aaron Smith, against the run of play but taken with clinical efficiency when hooker Codie Taylor made the first clean break of the game for the New Zealanders and Smith, running in support, ensured it wasn't wasted.

The difference in the Pretoria game ultimately came after both sides had emptied their benches, with New Zealand able to raise their intensity and the Boks battling to contain them with less experience on the pitch.

"I'm definitely happy with the progress and the growth we have shown", Erasmus told reporters. I think Kieran and the leaders can take a lot of pleasure and satisfaction in how they managed this game.

"It could easily have been one that we let go and allowed them to win. Sometimes when you keep knocking on the door someone will open it and you can get in‚" advised Hansen.
