Mitch McConnell Says Senate Republicans Set Scope of FBI's Kavanaugh Investigation

Republican Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, a fellow moderate and a friend of Collins, became the only Republican to say she opposed Kavanaugh.

A few hundred protesters are gathering outside the Capitol before the vote.

Still, it was a close-run thing: Kavanaugh's nomination was almost derailed by Christine Blasey Ford's allegations that the judge assaulted her when they were teenagers in the 1980s, which sparked uproar and forced Republicans to delay the confirmation vote for a week to allow time for a supplemental Federal Bureau of Investigation background check.

Sen. Joe Manchin announced on Friday afternoon that he will vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, becoming the only Democrat to do so. Trump has come down firmly on the other side - saying he's anxious the movement is unfairly targeting men. A formal investiture ceremony will take place at a later date, the Supreme Court also said.

Kavanaugh, a father of two, strenuously denied the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford, who says he sexually assaulted her when they were teens. Trump also spoke with Vice President Pence, Sen.

They wouldn't have leaked to the media Dr. Ford's confidential letter, sent to the Judiciary Committee's ranking Democrat, against the wishes of the woman making an allegation that she said she wanted to remain confidential.

Flake said he thinks "the world" of Murkowski and said she made her own decision despite intense pressure to vote yes.

Those passions were on full display in a fight that could energize both parties' voters in elections for control of Congress just five weeks away.

A total of 164 people were arrested according to U.S. Capitol Police.

Collins supported an additional FBI background check into the accusations, which stoked speculation that she might then break with Republicans and vote against Kavanaugh's nomination, but the results of that investigation - along with Bush's calls - paved the way for her support Friday. They said he also seemed ready to knock down President Barack Obama's health care law and to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing his 2016 campaign's alleged connections to Russian Federation try to pursue him in court.

Manchin is the only vulnerable Senate Democrat seeking re-election this year who supported Trump's Supreme Court nominee. I believe that she is a survivor of a sexual assault and that this trauma has upended her life. He accused Democrats of using destructive, unwarranted personal attacks on the nominee and even emboldening protesters, saying, "They have encouraged mob rule".

The vote to invoke cloture was 51-49.

As of Saturday morning, the campaign has raised over $3 million to support Collins' defeat.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said that the vote was "a pivotal day for us here in the Senate".

While the documents have not been made public, Republicans said they did not back up sexual assault allegations by Dr Ford, a psychology professor at Palo Alto University in California. "I don't believe the facts show it was Brett Kavanaugh", said Manchin. "And that is hard".

He added: "I hope everyone can understand that I was there as a son, husband and dad". Steve Daines, who will be at his daughter's wedding in Montana. He said she told him about it again three months ago in an email. "It will not change the outcome of the vote".

Barring an unlikely last-minute reversal from at least two senators who voted "yes" Friday to end the debate, Kavanaugh will be confirmed.

Senators sat at their desks during Saturday's roll call, rising when it was their turn to vote.

Manchin was the only Democrat to vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation.

On the other side, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the fight "a sorry epilogue to the brazen theft of Justice Scalia's seat". "It was very hurtful", she said.

Both testified about the alleged incident at a hearing with the Senate Judiciary Committee last month.
