The $3 Million Crowdfunding Effort To Unseat Sen. Collins In 2020

Kavanaugh replaces retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative jurist who often cast the deciding swing vote on ideologically divisive issues, upholding abortion and gay rights and the use of affirmative action aiding racial minorities in college admissions.

When Sen. Susan Collins announced, on Friday, October 5, that she would be voting "yes" on Brett M. Kavanaugh's confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, the four-term senator from ME went out of her way to convince Kavanaugh's detractors that he wasn't almost the far-right extremist they thought he was.

On the subject of Kavanaugh, she told reporters the supplemental Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that she pushed for, along with GOP Sens.

Rice, however, said her "ties to ME are long and deep". But she said there was no corroborating evidence, and indeed those Ms. Blasey Ford said were witness to the party where she said she was assaulted have all refuted her.

As Collins refused to indicate how she would vote after Kavanaugh's nomination was announced on July 9, after her colleagues expressed grave concerns that he had lied under oath, and after the allegations came out, Mainers were among the 122,000 people who made small donations to a fundraiser, that pledged to give all of the contributions to Collins' Democratic opponent in 2020.

In the end, Collins said she found Ford's allegation of sexual assault "sincere, painful and compelling" but said that absent any corroborating evidence she could not allow that to be the basis for voting against a nominee she thought was otherwise qualified. She quickly walked back her tweet, saying she's "not making any announcements" but "Maine and America deserve better".

Collins announced her support of Kavanaugh on Friday with a 44-minute speech on the Senate floor in which she offered a point-by-point defense of his judicial record and personal character. At some of those parties, she alleged, Kavanaugh was "fondling and grabbing girls without their consent" and, along with others, spiking drinks to force girls to lose their inhibitions.

A letter sent to Collins' office warned that if she votes to confirm Kavanaugh "EVERY waitress who serves you is going to spit in your food, and that's if you're lucky you (expletive)".

"I don't believe that the facts show it was Brett Kavanaugh", Sen.

Steve Nason, 44, said he had always questioned Ms. Collins' claims to be a moderate but that her speech impressed him with its thoroughness and thoughtfulness.

"The threats have been unending", she added, "It's deplorable. Everybody knows that", Ms. Collins said. "She didn't stop", Trump said. "That's what I did in this case", she said.

Collins also reacted to the fiery protests in the days leading up to the Senate vote.

"It would be pretty awesome to have a senator from ME who was a woman of color", said the 55-year-old university policy analyst. "I think the online crowd fundraising effort is the equivalent of trying to bribe me to take a particular position".
