Photos have surfaced of a 15-member "assassination squad" allegedly sent after the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who has been missing since entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last week.

A Turkish TV station has aired CCTV footage of missing dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi walking into the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul last Tuesday, with a black van later arriving and presumably taking him away.

The Sabah newspaper published images of the men apparently taken at passport control.

Worldwide media advocacy group Reporters Without Borders on Wednesday called for an independent global investigation into the fate of Jamal Khashoggi - the Saudi journalist who has been missing since October 2 - saying his disappearance has come amid "a particularly harsh and opaque crackdown on Saudi journalists and bloggers".

Saudi officials have dismissed the accusations as "baseless" and claim Khashoggi left the consulate by another exit, but did not provide proof.

Khashoggi disappeared after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate to obtain paperwork required for his marriage to his Turkish fiancee. The group then checked in to two hotels nearby the consulate building. The footage shows Khashoggi entering the consulate on October 2.

"The traditionally opaque methods used by Saudi Arabia to silence critical journalists constitute grounds for fearing the worst in the case of Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance", said Sophie Anmuth, the head of RSF's Middle East desk.

The footage all seemed to come from surveillance cameras, which would have been posted throughout the district housing the Saudi consulate and other diplomatic missions. The report added that most of the men stayed at the Wyndham Grand Hotel and Movenpick Hotel, both located close to the consulate.

On Wednesday, the Post published a column by Khashoggi's fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor who has written columns critical of the kingdom's powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, went missing on October 2 after entering the consulate for paperwork needed to marry his Turkish fiancée.

An unnamed senior official told the New York Times there was a complex operation in which Mr Khashoggi was killed within two hours of arriving and then dismembered.

Sabah daily on Wednesday published the names and images of what it called the "assassination team" including a man called Salah Muhammed Al-Tubaigy whose name it said matched that of a lieutenant-colonel in the Saudi forensic department. The video ends with shots of two private jets, saying that six men left at 5:40 p.m. and seven left at 9 p.m.

"At this time, I implore President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to help shed light on Jamal's disappearance", she said.

The Washington Post also reports that prior to Mr Khashoggi's visit, United States intelligence had intercepted communications of Saudi officials discussing a plot to capture him.

On Tuesday Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy revealed in a statement that Saudi authorities had said they "were open to cooperation and that a search can be conducted at the consulate building".
