Kavanaugh's critics, unhappy with the Senate process, Kavanaugh's record and the way sexual assault allegations were handled, still plan to continue their protests against him.

Kavanaugh's confirmation proceedings exploded in controversy after Christine Blasey Ford went public with allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982.

Kavanaugh promised to be an "impartial" judge and a "team player" during his ceremonial swearing-in at the White House late Monday.

Trump slammed Kavanaugh's opponents for a "campaign of personal destruction".

Kavanaugh is the second justice Trump has successfully nominated to the Supreme Court, following the confirmation previous year of Neil Gorsuch to the seat left by the late Antonin Scalia.

As the White House ceremony got under way on Monday, Mr Trump said: "On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the awful pain and suffering you have been forced to endure".

And he said that "under historic scrutiny", Kavanaugh was "proven innocent".

All eight of the Supreme Court's other justices attended the White House ceremony, a show of collegiality by members of an ideologically divided court.

Kavanaugh took the two required oaths privately at the court on Saturday, letting him begin work right away.

"However much we might sympathize or agree with EPA's policy objectives, EPA may act only within the boundaries of its statutory authority", Kavanaugh wrote in the ruling. "The Supreme Court is an institution of law".

Kavanaugh, whose bid to join the top USA court almost failed after a California professor accused him of assaulting her when they were in high school, said he would enter his new job without bitterness despite a political fight that he told lawmakers had destroyed his family and his name.

Republicans had hoped to confirm Kavanaugh in time for the court's October 1 start of the new term.

'This has been a shot in the arm for us going into the fall election, ' he told reporters in Louisville on Monday of Kavanaugh's confirmation.

He called the Kavanaugh row "a disgraceful situation brought about by people who are evil", and said that the result was "very exciting".

Kavanaugh was confirmed 50-48 Saturday after a bitter Senate battle.

Kavanaugh was sworn in Saturday evening in a private ceremony as protesters chanted outside the court building.

He thanked the Republicans who stood with Kavanaugh and said "it was a great honor to be involved in this situation".
