Swift, who will be voting in her home state of Tennessee, publicly endorsed Phil Bredesen for the Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives, while singling out Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn for reproval, saying her voting record in Congress "appalls and terrifies me".

"If you look at people like Rosanne Cash, Jason Isbell, it's part of their DNA. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree one hundred percent on every issue, but we have to vote anyway", she wrote. She voted against equal pay for women.

"One thing is clear, we're seeing a massive surge in the 18-24 and 25-29 voters, which is her fan demographic".

"What I used to love about Taylor Swift is she stayed away from politics", Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative non-profit student organization Turning Point, said on Fox News television on Monday.

In a surprise Instagram post, Swifty broke her long silence on politics and encouraged her more than 112 million followers on the platform to register to vote. In October alone, the site has reported registering 5,183 in the state.

Swift has been famously silent on political matters in the past, causing some to speculate an allegiance with President Donald Trump, while others skewered her for remaining quiet during the 2016 election.

Some sought to play down Swift's influence outside her predominantly young girl fan base, including former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

Of the roughly 240,000 people who have registered on Vote.org for the upcoming midterm elections on November 6, almost half, or about 102,000, are between the ages of 18 and 29, the website found.

Swift got political for the very first time on Sunday (Oct. 7), sharing her support for two Tennessee democrats in the races for Senate and House of Representatives. "I don't think it's going to hurt her career".

Vote.org also saw a definite jump in traffic in the wake of her Instagram post.

Two years ago, Democrats turned million-dollar performances by pop icons such as Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Pharrell, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Bon Jovi and Katy Perry into zero electoral votes. Grammy-nominated country singer Cam said she hasn't seen a backlash against Swift, but she said anyone should feel free to speak their minds. Candidates seeking to take maximum advantage of what is a quantifiable increase of interest among young voters in the final weeks of the campaign would be wise to follow Swift's framework.

"I'm sure Taylor Swift has nothing or doesn't know anything about her", Trump said of the 28-year-old singer.
