The singer, who opened up politically in a lengthy Instagram post this week, used her speech to encourage fans to vote.

Swift's four prizes have made her the most decorated woman in American Music Awards history. Cardi B's husband, Offset of the rap trio Migos, danced along in the audience with group member Quavo as Cardi B worked the stage with vibrant dance moves, including the salsa.

Khalid, Quavo and Offset were some of the audience members dancing along, while others sang and some even filmed her with their phones. Other performers included Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliott. Even though Tracee Ellis Ross almost stole the show, the other A-listers were out in full force - we're talking all of the pop divas as well as 2018's biggest breakout stars.

Rapper-singer XXXTentacion, who was fatally shot in June, was also honoured: He won favourite soul/R&B album for his 2017 debut, 17. He also just received posthumously the Best New Artist Award at the BET Hip-Hop Awards last weekend as well. So to accept the award on his behalf was his mother, Cleopatra Bernard. Instead of a mark on her record, she took home the first award of the night: Favorite Artist - Rap/Hip-Hop.
