Walking Dead season 9 premiere loses almost half its audience

In comparison, the season 8 premiere drew a 5.0 rating and 11.4 million viewers a year ago. The lowest season premiere ratings still belong to Season 1, which garnered 5.35 million viewers. Morris retains his neutral rating on the company.

Down 27 percent in the demo and 23 percent in the audience over the season eight finale, and down 50 percent in the demo and 47 percent in audience size over the season eight premiere, the downtick in both rating and audience size continues a long-running and alarming trend that has plagued the series in recent seasons. The Season 9 premiere was also down approximately 50% in the key demo and 47% in total viewers compared to the Season 8 opener, which drew a 5.0 and 11.4 million viewers previous year.

At New York Comic Con, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, who is the founder of Skybound Entertainment, also confirmed the announcement. It's also down almost 2 million viewers from April's Season 8 finale.

Weeks after Telltale Games announced it would be laying off a majority of its staff, another studio has revealed that it will be finishing the final season of Telltale's The Walking Dead adventure game series.

In the admitted absence of those hard numbers, but with an anecdotical look around social media this weekend and the realities of TV viewing in 2018, it doesn't take much to make the leap that a not insignificant portion of the hardcore TWD fanbase opted for the early look option. The Live+3 and Live+7 numbers will provide a fuller portrait of how the premiere actually did. Hopefully, because that's a real new beginning.
