Monstrous Hurricane Michael tears into Florida

Hurricane Michael claimed its first life after roaring ashore in Florida on Wednesday, flooding homes and streets and toppling trees and power lines in the Gulf of Mexico beachfront area where it made landfall as a raging Category 4 storm.

A day after the supercharged storm crashed ashore amid white sand beaches, fishing towns and military bases, Michael was no longer a Category 4 monster packing 250 km/h winds.

Meanwhile, tropical storm warnings were in effect for parts of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Hurricane Michael is predicted to travel northeast across the southern US, reaching the Atlantic Ocean again on tomorrow night (Oct. 11).

"We just finished renovating and updating", she said.

- Tropical Storm Nadine's maximum sustained winds increased to 65 miles per hour Wednesday.

The storm continued on its destructive path, bringing heavy rains and tearing down trees. The Carolinas are still reeling from severe flooding in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence less than a month ago.

Only the 1935 "Labor Day" hurricane, which hit the Florida Keys, and 1969's Hurricane Camille, which struck MS, were more intense at landfall in all of US history.

Ricketts called for Michael to be a tropical depression, or a post-tropical depression, by the time it gets to the WTOP listening area, and to be pushed off the coast of Virginia by the cold front.

In an advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the potential for a catastrophic event along the Florida Panhandle becomes even more real as Category 4 Hurricane Michael has increased in intensity.

About 162,000 homes and business customers were already without power around mid-afternoon in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, utility companies said.

Around 375,000 people were under either mandatory or voluntary evacuation orders across 18 counties in Florida in preparation of the storm, and a state of emergency had been declared in 35 counties prior to the storm making landfall.

"This situation has NEVER happened before", it said on Twitter.

"We are in new territory", National Hurricane Center Meteorologist Dennis Feltgen wrote on Facebook.

Looking at the entire hurricane season, Michael had the strongest winds since 1992 and Hurricane Andrew.

Moving north-northeast at 16 miles per hour, the center of Michael, with maximum sustained winds of 125 miles per hour, reached southeastern Alabama and southwest Georgia by 5 p.m.

"I can not disappoint the thousands of people that are there - and the thousands that are going", he tweeted. "The emergency declaration is effective for seven days and makes all state resources available to local governments and entities within the impacted area of the hurricane", his office said. "God willing we'll still have some place". A motion toward the northeast at a faster forward speed is expected later today through Friday night. Up to a foot (30 cm) of rain was forecast in Florida.

Officials reported at least one storm-related fatality, a man in Greensboro, Florida, was killed when a tree fell on top of his home, a spokesperson for the Gadsden County sheriff said.
