Was Khashoggi sent to Istanbul by Embassy in DC?

Turkish officials reportedly believe that those 12 Saudi officials killed Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and then transported his dead body back to Saudi Arabia.

Why it matters: The incident threatens a diplomatic crisis in Turkey's relations with Saudi Arabia.

Mr Khashoggi was a regular contributor to The Post, and colleagues there have said he often expressed concern for his safety because of his writing.

Saudi Arabia denies this.

"When this person enters, whose duty is it to prove that he left or not?"

"His criticism, voiced over the past year, most surely rankles Mohammed bin Salman, who was elevated to crown prince last year and has carried out a wide-ranging campaign to silence dissent while trying to modernize the kingdom", the Post editorial read. When asked if he would return home again Khashoggi said: "I don't think..."

The programme has released audio of the conversation, saying that although it would not normally do so, it had decided to make an exception "in light of the circumstances".

What's been the reaction to the disappearance?

United Nations experts have also demanded a "prompt independent and worldwide investigation" into his disappearance.

US and Saudi officials have yet to comment on that report. All 15 left just a few hours later, and Turkey has now identified the roles that most or all of them held in the Saudi government or security services, the unnamed source told the Times.

Crown Prince Mohammed's brother and the Saudi ambassador to the US, Khaled, has insisted all the reports about his disappearance or death "are completely false and baseless".

When was he last seen?

The Washington Post released on Tuesday what appears to be the last-known photograph of Khashoggi, walking into the Saudi consulate from which he apparently never left.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said it was alarmed by reports Khashoggi may have been killed inside the consulate.

The report by the Sabah newspaper, which is close to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, published images of the men apparently taken at passport control. He moved to the USA more than a year ago, where he continued to comment on his country both in print and on television.

A Turkish official told the AP late Saturday that an "initial assessment" by police concluded Khashoggi had been killed at the consulate.

The picture bore a date and time stamp, as well as a Turkish caption saying that Khashoggi was arriving at the consulate.

Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who had been living in self-exile in USA for more than a year, had disappeared last week after entering the Saudi Arabian consulate building in Istanbul.

The U.S. State Department said it did not know what happened to Khashoggi and whether he was alive or not.

The consul showed TV news crews empty cupboards in the consulate's office to "prove" the journalist wasn't hidden there.

Major American daily newspaper the Washington Post printed a blank column in solidarity with the renowned journalist on Friday.

He had been living in the United States in a self-imposed exile since past year, in part due to the rise of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the son of King Salman.

On his first worldwide trip as president, Trump visited Saudi Arabia and announced $110 billion in proposed arms sales.

Accusations the Saudi leadership directly ordered the alleged assassination of Khashoggi will put further pressure on the United States and other allies to demand a transparent investigation, with possible serious repercussions to bilateral relations if it doesn't come to fruition.
