ASI: Soyuz Space Vehicle Designed to Safely Return Crew in Any Conditions

A Reuters reporter who observed the launch from around one kilometre away said it had gone smoothly in its initial stages and that the failure of the booster rockets must have occurred at higher altitude.

Hague and Ovchinin were shown being violently shaken in the vessel, and shortly thereafter the feed cut out - to be replaced with a look inside NASA's mission control room.

It was to be Hague's first flight to the station, launching at 3:40 a.m. Thursday from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome. Last year, NASA astronaut Jack Fischer and Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin shared a ride to ISS.

It was the first serious launch problem experienced by a manned Soyuz space mission since 1983 when a fire broke out at the base of the booster rocket while the crew was preparing for lift-off.

A NASA statement on the aborted launch stated: "NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and the NASA team are monitoring the situation carefully".

The ballistic descent is a sharper angle of landing compared to normal, NASA said. They were met by rescue teams in remote Kazakhstan more than 200 miles from their launchpad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

"Scary, scary, scary - not what we wanted", one family member said. The first crewed flights would not take place until several months after that, unless the space agency is willing to take additional risks with those missions.

"I really would be very surprised", he said.

Even if the Soyuz spacecraft is cleared for launch before December, Hadfield said, it could end up carrying astronauts from Thursday's launch rather than the next scheduled crew.

Here's the latest on the failed space launch carrying two astronauts (all times local to Kazakhstan). A source at the Baikonur space center told Sputnik on Thursday that all Russian manned launches had been suspended after the Soyuz accident. He is a colonel in the Air Force. He added that space crew is trained to endure such load.

While the rocket would normally be carrying three people, the third space was instead used for cargo to be taken up to the space station. They then started the process of flying back to Baikonur. Three Americans, two Russians and one German are now aboard the station.

UPDATE 2: the two astronauts have been recovered and they are safe.

That would in theory push the time limit of the crew's return to Earth to early January. He didn't say if he suspected any of the station's crew. That would be a huge change for an outpost that has been continuously occupied for about 18 years, but it's something that NASA and its global partners have always been prepared to do, if necessary.

He also notes that critical systems are created to operate automatically or with the help of controllers on the ground.

This failure comes as America is working to wean itself off of its Russian rocket dependency. "We have resources well into next year for this crew, so there's no concern about resources on board".

"Glad our friends are fine", space station commander Alexander Gerst, a European Space Agency astronaut from Germany, tweeted from orbit.
