Manchester City have rubbished claims they made a failed bid to sign Barcelona legend Lionel Messi. "Before speaking to the coach, he'll play PlayStation and then on the field, he asks to be and wants to be the leader", said Maradona, who was, quite frankly, talking in a suspicious state of mind. He's the best in the world with Cristiano [Ronaldo].

"Let's stop making a god out of Messi".

But Al Mubarak confirmed that there was truth to reports City were hoping to recruit five-time Ballon d'Or victor Messi, with former Barca boss Guardiola tasked with speaking to the Argentinian.

That is according to City's chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, who asked Guardiola which player he desired most in the world.

Maradona, who is in Mexico coaching second-division Sinaloa, said that if he was Argentina coach he would "not call on Messi" before adding "never say never".

"You have to take the leadership away for him to be the Messi we want him to be".
